The Natural History of Selborne is a collection of Gilbert White's letters to Thomas Pennant (P in tracklist below) and Daines Barrington (B below), first published in 1788. In these letters he tells of his observations of local wildlife and discusses ideas arising from those observations, including the explanations of his contemporary society. The letters reveal many tantalising details about the English countryside of the time and contemporary life in a local country community. Gilbert White is still regarded by many as the archetype of the unassuming, patient, observant naturalist.
Double album on CD of extracts from Gilbert White's letters, read by Benjamin Whitrow to a background of appropriate wildlife sounds and atmospheric sound effects. Total playing time 72'39" & 75'43". DDD. Stereo. Recorded and produced by John Paterson for the Gilbert White Society.
