Borneo Rainforest

A musical & dramatic sound-picture of a day in the primary forest of the region from pre-dawn to dusk.

Species list

The album has been carefully edited as a continuous piece covering a day in the forest from dawn to dusk. Before first light, dew is dripping from the treetops on to the leaf-strewn floor of the forest as the gibbons start to call. Dawn turns to day as the birds begin to sing and many strange and beautiful sounds fill the air. Later when the day warms up, the high-pitched jangle of insect noise is pervasive. By late-afternoon the rumble of thunder warns that the daily downpour is on its way. Dusk approaches with the croaking of frogs and the saw-like stridulation of Empress cicadas, before the deluge of warm rain ends the day. John's musical ear combined with his skills in ambient stereo recording make this an outstanding album. The sheer quality of the sound-picture is stunning: listen out for the wingbeats of the hornbills as they pass.

Total playing time 68'05". Only available on CD (DDD). Stereo. Recorded in 1993 in an area of primary rainforest in Sabah on the island of Borneo. No commentary. Recorded and produced by John Paterson.
